Overthinkingit bids a fond farewell to Charlton Heston, who passed away Saturday night in his home, at the age of 84.

This clip from the Omega Man seems oddly appropriate.

See? See? Now that’s how you read a line. The remake of this movie is supposed to be pretty good… but Will Smith is no Charlton Heston.

And now, no one is.

It’s too bad his detour into gun-nut-dome has overshadowed his astounding acting career and his support of the civil rights movement. Kind of like how Nader’s foray into logic-defying presidential runs is foreshadowing his legacy of fighting for consumer rights.

Also, somewhere, a damn dirty ape is rejoicing at this news.

I dunno, I think the gut-nut-dom and the acting career are of a piece, really. If you acted in two Planet of the Apes movies, The Omega Man, and Soylent Green, it would make you sincerely believe the world was coming to an end?

And what do you reach for in the midst of coming apocalypse?

Guns! (And if it’s not at your doorstep just yet, an NRA membership, I suppose.)

Most of the time that he supposedly spent as the country’s top gun nut he really spent slowly dying of alzheimer’s disease.

People just kept bashing and bashing and bashing the guy after he could no longer defend himself anywhere, and it was tasteless and sad.

If he’d died a decade earlier, maybe people would have had a little more class.
