Overthinking BSG: Episodes 1.1-1.8

Mlawski uses post-Freudian analysis to unravel the Cylons’ daddy issues.

In particular, I want to look at what Harry Guntrip would say about the Cylons’ wacky psychology.  Guntrip was an object relations theorist who was most influential in and around the 1960s.  Although he, like most object relations theorists, has (unfairly, I think) fallen out of favor with the current psychology establishment, his work was a major precursor to John Bowlby’s attachment theory, which is still so influential today you probably learned about it in Psych 101.

Anyway, according to Harry Guntrip, a person who is screwed up in some way was probably screwed up because he was involved in a frustrated relationship, probably early in life.  Because Guntrip was a Freudian, he’d usually talk about infants being in frustrated relationships with mothers’ breasts – whatever.  What’s relevant to the Cylon conversation is Guntrip’s types of anxiety over object relations.  He primarily talks about two types of anxiety: “depressive anxiety” and “schizoid anxiety.”

Contrary to what it sounds like, “depressive anxiety” actually isn’t too bad.  Let’s say A and B are in a relationship and A is annoyed with B for some reason.  If A has “depressive anxiety,” he’s actually in fairly good shape, because he has the confidence to actually get mad at B in an aggressive, rather than passive-aggressive, way.  (The “anxiety” part comes in because it’s psychologically tricky to love someone but be furiously angry with them at the same time.)  Anyway, hopefully A will be angry with B in a constructive rather than violent manner, they’ll work out their problems, and everything will be hunky-dory.

Cylons are not like this.

Cylons, it seems to me, are not depressive but schizoid.  A schizoid person, according to Guntrip, learned some bad lessons early on in life,  probably because he didn’t get the attention and love he needed.  Sound familiar?

As an example, let’s imagine a schizoid child named C, who belongs to parent D.  D didn’t give C the love and attention he needed, so C grows up totally confused.  C becomes ashamed (“why am I loving something that doesn’t love me back?”) and feels helpless and weak.

Now here’s the crux of Guntrip’s theory.  Guntrip said – and I think this makes a lot of sense based on my interactions with, you know, people – that most human beings would much rather be bad than be weak.  Specifically, he said, “Human beings prefer to feel ‘bad somebodies’ rather than ‘weak nonentities.’”

If that is true, what does that mean?  First, it means that C retreats into himself, because he’s not getting love from outside.  Then, as a defense mechanism to keep himself from feeling powerless (which he is, in this case – he can’t get his parents to love him), he likely develops some kind of superiority complex.  Generally, this superiority complex goes along the lines of, “I’m better than my stupid parents whose love I want,” but you can also see it at work in the stereotypical goth/emo high schooler.  “Grr, I’m so much better than those stupid well-adjusted popular kids whom I’m really secretly jealous of!”  In Cylons, it takes the form of, “Stupid humans and their stupid love!  We’re so much better than them with our Internet-minds and our better religion!  Nyah!”

We’re not done with little C yet, however.  Because it’s better to be bad than weak, little C with probably try to take control of his life in other ways.  Other maladjusted ways.

Let me give you two BSG-related examples to show you two ways child C could grow up.

Example 1: Apollo the Perfectionist.

The idea here is: if I am good enough, they’ll love me.

At some point in his life, Apollo learned that Adama didn’t love him.  (It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not.  He at least got the impression that Adama didn’t love him, and that was enough.)  Child Apollo, like our example C, doesn’t want to believe that he’s not in control of his own family life – he doesn’t yet understand that Adama treats him that way because that’s just how Adama is – so he comes to believe that if he does everything right, his father will come to love him.  So he does everything his father asks of him, down to the letter.  He becomes a hero, one of the best in the fleet.  He becomes the paragon of excellence when it comes to morality and his work.  Because he achieves so much, he probably gets a little bit of the old superiority complex.

But Apollo eventually realizes it’s never enough.  No matter how hard he tries, and no matter how much he alienates those around him by being such a tight-ass, he can’t make his dad love him.  So when his brother dies, Apollo finally snaps.  He totally flips out on Adama, spewing out decades’ worth of repressed hatred, which in reality is just a perverted desire for love.  No one can go on being a perfectionist forever.

The show hasn’t yet given me enough backstory to know if the Cylons ever consciously tried to win humanity’s love, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.  So they might be like Apollo.  My feeling is, though, that they’re more similar to…

Example 2: Starbuck the Rebel.

The idea here is: they don’t love me ‘cause I’m bad.

If Leoben Conoy is to be trusted – and Starbuck’s reaction seems to imply he wasn’t lying about this one – Starbuck’s mother was abusive towards her.  So let’s go back in time and see Little Kara.  Little Kara doesn’t want to feel that she’s not in control of her family life, so she takes her mother’s abuse.  Knowing what I know about adult-Starbuck, I’m going to bet she even acted out so she felt like she deserved this abuse.

So Little Kara grows up with a slightly irrational hatred of authority figures like Colonel Tigh, and, time after time, she goes out of her way to get herself into trouble with them.  (See Dr. Cox from Scrubs for another excellent version of this type.)  Starbuck also abuses herself physically by smoking like a fiend and being a daredevil pilot.  She also has a superiority complex in that she’s a cocky smart-ass (which is why she’s my favorite character).

It all boils down to this: Starbuck has to believe she’s in control of her own suffering.  In her mind, her mom abused her because she was a bad person.  The one thing she fears most is actually being a good girl, because if she was good and people STILL didn’t love her, it would wreck her entire world view.  It would mean she didn’t have control over her own destiny, and that’s the one thing she can’t take.

But, hey, don’t take my word for it.  Look at what Leoben Conoy had to say about Starbuck:

I know you, you’re damaged.  You were born to a woman who believes that suffering is good for the soul, so you suffered.  Your life is a testament to pain, injuries, accidents. Some inflicted upon others, others inflicted upon yourself.  Surrounds you like a bubble, but it’s not real, that’s just something she put into your head.  It’s something you wanna believe ‘cause it means that you’re the problem, not the world that you live in.  You wanna believe it because it means that you’re bad luck, like a cancer that needs to be removed.  Because you hear her voice every day, and you want her to be right.

And what does Starbuck do after he says this?  She tortures him, thus proving him, and her mother, right.  It’s better to be bad than be weak.

Conclusions.

It seems to me that the Cylon-human relationship follows this same schizoid pattern.  Cylons want to be loved, but they’re abandoned after humanity’s robot-related post-partum depression.  Next, the Cylons retreat into themselves like teenagers who plan to blow up their school because they don’t know how to properly interact with other people.  Like those teenagers, they start saying they’re superior to the human race they modeled themselves after and so obviously want to be a part of.  They don’t want to feel weak, like they have no control over humanity’s feelings for them, so they develop a “plan” so they can feel in control.  They rebel against their parents.

But they don’t kill them all.  Because, at heart, they still want their parents to love them.  To return to the Freud quotation that began this essay, “Identification is a substitute for a lost human relationship.”  Cylons didn’t get the parental love they needed, so they rebelled but at the same time tried to identify with – i.e. mimic – the humans they so hate.

 Oh, humanity.  Cylons can’t live with or without you.  (With or without you-ou-ou.)

  • Adama is not a Cylon.  N-word, please.
  • Although I do not like BSG as much as I thought I would (other than Baltar and Starbuck the characters aren’t really hooking me, the dourness of the show means I have to force myself to watch every day, and some of the plot points don’t make sense to me), I will slowly become a fan.
  • At least two of the following characters will be killed off by the end of the season once the writers figure out how uninteresting they are: Dee, the Chief, the Boomers, Billy, Helo.  Ideally, one of them will be shot at point blank range by one of the more interesting characters.

BSG has been “overthought” (overthinked?) to death over the last few years. Lots of blogs dedicated to it, especially during its final season. If I have to read one more post about how “the humans are acting like robotic killing machines… how ironic!”, I will… well, not read it.

Welp, for good or for bad, I have taken Kevin’s words to heart.  After watching the first eight episodes of BSG, I spent most of this week trying to figure out what the heck to write about them.  Rule of law, the nature of the soul, the ever-shifting line between freedom and safety: so far, these themes have been so close to the surface that you almost can’t call them “subtext” anymore.  They’re pretty “text text,” as it were.  (Or should we call them “supertext”?)  In any event, I don’t want to bore you, Kevin, or anyone else.  I won’t be retreading any topics that have almost certainly been written about before.

So I said to myself: if I’m going to write about Battlestar Galactica, but I’m not going to talk about political theory, religion, or robot ethics, what’s left to talk about?  When I thought about it, the answer was obvious.

Freudian psychology.

Yeah, you heard that right, kids.  Get ready to psychoanalyze!*

*Don’t worry; I’m not going to be talking about Oedipus.  Not much, anyway.

Episode Recaps

Episode 1.1 (“33”): The Cylons have been tracking the BSG and the rest of the human race for five days straight.  Unfortunately for the human race, the Cylons keep figuring out where they are every 33 minutes, which means no one has slept for those five days.  So everyone’s nerves are pretty frayed by the time they hear that the Olympic Carrier, a passenger ship, probably has Cylons and/or nukes on it.  Adama and Roslin correctly decide to destroy it; Starbuck has doubts.  Meanwhile, a copy of Boomer has landed on Caprica to seduce Helo for some reason, and a religious Number Six wants Baltar to make robo-babeez with her.

Episode 1.2 (“Water”): On the BSG, Boomer 1 comes to the realization that she may be a Cylon when she wakes up to find herself with a bag of explosives at her feet.  Then the BSG’s water supply blows up.  Adama asks Baltar to invent a Cylon detector.  The Chief thinks his girlfriend the robot has been framed.

Episode 1.3 (“Bastille Day”): There’s water on a nearby planet but not enough hands to bring it up to the ships, so Apollo suggests getting some prisoners to do it in exchange for their freedom.  Apollo, Dee, Cally, and Billy go to the prison ship, only to get held hostage by a famous terrorist/political prisoner (Tom Zarek) and his crew.  Zarek wants Roslin to step down as president and hold elections.  Apollo agrees and makes a deal with Zarek: he’ll get his elections in a year if he and his friends help with the water extraction.

Episode 1.4 (“Act of Contrition”): Adama asks Starbuck to train new fighter pilots to fight the Cylons, but she refuses to teach the kids because of what she did back in the past.  Cue flashback: Starbuck used to be engaged to Zak Adama and passed him in basic flight even though he was a terrible pilot, and then he got into an accident and died.  End flashback.  Starbuck tells Commander Adama about this, he gets mad, she goes out to train the students and gets hit when the Cylons attack.  She falls down to the planet and to be continued.  Meanwhile on Caprica, Helo and Boomer 2 find a bomb shelter.

Episode 1.5 (“You Can’t Go Home Again”): Starbuck is stranded out on the rock she landed on and has very little oxygen.  Adama sends ships out to find her.  Roslin argues this is a waste of resources and could mean their downfall.  I agree with Roslin but find myself having new feelings of warmth toward Commander Adama.  Curse you, show.  Way to manipulate me.  Anyway, Starbuck gets home by finding a Cylon raider — which is totally a sweet bio-ship! – and figuring out how to fly it.  Meanwhile on Caprica, Helo gets knocked out by Cylons, and Boomer 2 hangs out with her robot buddies.

Episode 1.6 (“Litmus”): A copy of Doral suicide bombs himself on the BSG because almost no one knows Cylons look like humans.  Adama orders an independent tribunal to figure out who helped him get on board.  Sergeant Hadrian — who is made to seem unlikable, but she’s only doing her job, show – interrogates everyone and comes to the conclusion that Chief Tyrol was involved in the attack.  (Really he was banging Boomer 1, which is not allowed.)  Luckily for the Chief, one of his men takes the blame.  Hadrian then interrogates Adama about all this but Adama doesn’t believe in rule of law — even when he himself ordered the tribunal in the first place, hello!  He marches straight out of there.  The Chief breaks up with Boomer, suspecting that she’s a Cylon.

Episode 1.7 (“Six Degrees of Separation”): Number Six, a religious nut, argues with Baltar, an atheist, about God.  Then she gets angry and disappears.  She turns up later in the flesh as Shelly Godfrey — nice name, writers — and tells Adama that she has proof that Baltar caused the apocalypse.  Gaeta analyzes Shelly’s proof and finds out that, yes, Baltar is the man with the bomb in her photograph.  Baltar is sent to the brig, where he starts begging God for mercy, much to Number Six’s delight.  Miraculously, just then Gaeta discovers the photo was doctored, so Baltar goes free.  Number Six reveals to Baltar that this was some roundabout plan to make him into a hero.

Episode 1.8 (“Flesh and Bone”): One of the passenger ships has a Cylon on it: a copy of Leoben Conoy.  Adama asks Starbuck to interrogate him (it?).  Leoben claims he planted a nuke on one of the ships.  Starbuck physically tortures him to get the info; Leoben psychologically tortures her for a reason that’s kind of unclear.  Eventually Roslin gets Leoben to admit there was never any bomb, and she orders him thrown out the airlock.  In other news, Baltar’s Cylon detector has detected Boomer 1, though he hasn’t told anyone yet.  On Caprica, Boomer 2 has actually fallen in love with Helo and decides to help him escape Number Six and Doral.  (Whoops!  Some Cylon programmer just got fired!)

In my first post in this series, I focused primarily on Adama’s first big speech in the miniseries.  You know, the one where he basically conflated humanity’s relationship with the Cylons with his own failed relationship with his son?  And then he went onto suggest that these relationships all run parallel to the relationship between God and his sinful children?  Remember?

The parallels Adama laid out in that speech are still around in these first eight episodes of the series proper.  The relationship between God and Man is still at the forefront – see Baltar’s daily conversations with Number Six for details — and the interplay between Adama and his son is still paramount.  This week, we also saw another pseudo-parent-child relationship in the conflict between Adama and Starbuck, whom he treats as a daughter.  Clearly the show is suggesting that we should view the relationship between Cylon and Man not as a simple relationship between hated enemies but as a more complex relationship of a child and parent.

Thus: Sigmund Freud.

Well, actually, I don’t really want to talk about Freud much at all.  Rather, I want to talk about his successors, the so-called object relations theorists.

What’s an object relation?  It’s the relationship between a person and an object.  Duh, okay, but what’s an object?  Here, we’re not talking necessarily about a physical object that can sit on your desk.  Here “object” means, roughly, “the object of one’s desire.”  In most cases, this object is a person, and, in many cases, that person is a parent or a stand-in for a parent.

Last week, I tried to guess what the Cylons’ ultimate motivation was, and it seems to me now that the only way to make sense of their actions in the show thus far** is to apply object relations theory.  Under this theory, the most important thing to a person isn’t his or her own personality, but his or her relationships to objects – or lack thereof.

So rather than focus on the psychology of any individual Cylons or humans, I first want to focus on the dynamic between the Cylons and the object they think about more than anything else: the human race.

Question one: what do the Cylons actually think about humanity?  The question is not as simple as it first seems.  As ironic as it is to say, the Cylons’ feelings about humanity are complex and varied.  To wit:

Cylons hate humans.

Humans created Cylons and then abandoned them.  There’s a kind of Frankenstein/Frankenstein’s Monster thing going on here.  Anyway, they fought a war and the humans apparently won.  Then the Cylons came back and blew most of them up.

Cylons hate humans but not enough to kill all of them.

Look, the Cylons had every opportunity to destroy all  of humanity, down to the last man, including those on the Battlestar Galactica.  What with Boomer 1 and Doral and “Shelly Godfrey” and “Leoben Conoy” cavorting around the BSG as they please with nukes strapped to their chests… if the Cylons wanted humanity dead, I’m pretty sure we’d be dead.  And yet, the human race survives.  WTF Cylons?

I could be very, very wrong about this, but it seems to me that Number Six does take some real pleasure in being Baltar’s imaginary girlfriend.  Maybe there’s a secret, sinister reason why she talked to him about their having robo-babies together and why she seemed so upset when he said he didn’t believe in God.  You ask me, she wants a real relationship with him and is hurt when he doesn’t agree with her.  I could be dead wrong about this.

Number Six aside, it also seemed to me that the copy of Leoben Conoy from episode eight legitimately seemed to want to help Starbuck out with her psychological problems and did want the human race to reach Earth for some reason.  And, of course, we can’t forget about Boomers’ 1 & 2 love for the Chief and Helo, respectively.  As the posters to Steven Spielberg’s AI (basically) said, she may not be real, but her love is.

On a related note, although the Cylons are purportedly “humanity’s children,” they sure seem to like having sex with their human parents a whole lot.  Just sayin’.  (And that’s my reference to the Oedipus/Electra complexes.)

Yes, you can argue that they did this to infiltrate our ranks and kill us more easily, but, really, did they need to imitate us that well?  All they needed to do was look human enough get past the BSG’s security.  You don’t need to be programmed with love, sorrow, and religion to get past a security checkpoint.

Long story short: while the Cylons clearly hate humanity, I think they kind of love us a little, too.

But wait! you say.  How can Cylons love humanity but also want to destroy us?  For that, we have to talk to the object relations theorists.

Mlawski’s Predictions (Week 2):

Adama is not a Cylon.  N-word, please.

Although I do not like BSG as much as I thought I would (other than Baltar and Starbuck the characters aren’t really hooking me, the dourness of the show means I have to force myself to watch every day, and some of the plot points don’t make sense to me), I will slowly become a fan.

At least two of the following characters will be killed off by the end of the season once the writers figure out how uninteresting they are: Dee, the Chief, the Boomers, Billy, Helo.  Ideally, one of them will be shot at point blank range by one of the more interesting characters.

In particular, I want to look at what Harry Guntrip would say about the Cylons’ wacky psychology.  Guntrip was an object relations theorist who was most influential in and around the 1960s.  Although he, like most object relations theorists, has (unfairly, I think) fallen out of favor with the current psychology establishment, his work was a major precursor to  John Bowlby’s attachment theory, which is still so influential today you probably learned about it in Psych 101.

Anyway, according to Harry Guntrip, a person who is screwed up in some way was probably screwed up because he was involved in a frustrated relationship, probably early in life.  Because Guntrip was a Freudian, he’d usually talk about infants being in frustrated relationships with mothers’ breasts – whatever.  What’s relevant to the Cylon conversation is Guntrip’s types of anxiety over object relations.  He primarily talks about two types of anxiety: “depressive anxiety” and “schizoid anxiety.”

Contrary to what it sounds like, “depressive anxiety” actually isn’t too bad.  Let’s say A and B are in a relationship and A is annoyed with B for some reason.  If A has “depressive anxiety,” he’s actually in fairly good shape, because he has the confidence to actually get mad at B in an aggressive, rather than passive-aggressive, way.  (The “anxiety” part comes in because it’s psychologically tricky to love someone but be furiously angry with them at the same time.)  Anyway, hopefully A will be angry with B in a constructive rather than violent manner, they’ll work out their problems, and everything will be hunky-dory.

Cylons are not like this.

Cylons, it seems to me, are not depressive but schizoid.  A schizoid person, according to Guntrip, learned some bad lessons early on in life,  probably because he didn’t get the attention and love he needed.  Sound familiar?

As an example, let’s imagine a schizoid child named C, who belongs to parent D.  D didn’t give C the love and attention he needed, so C grows up totally confused.  C becomes ashamed (“why am I loving something that doesn’t love me back?”) and feels helpless and weak.

Now here’s the crux of Guntrip’s theory.  Guntrip said – and I think this makes a lot of sense based on my interactions with, you know, people – that most human beings would much rather be bad than be weak.  Specifically, he said, “Human beings prefer to feel ‘bad somebodies’ rather than ‘weak nonentities.’”

If that is true, what does that mean?  First, it means that C retreats into himself, because he’s not getting love from outside.  Then, as a defense mechanism to keep himself from feeling powerless (which he is, in this case – he can’t get his parents to love him), he likely develops some kind of superiority complex.  Generally, this superiority complex goes along the lines of, “I’m better than my stupid parents whose love I want,” but you can also see it at work in the stereotypical goth/emo high schooler.  “Grr, I hate those stupid well-adjusted popular kids whom I’m really secretly jealous of!”  In Cylons, it takes the form of, “Stupid humans and their stupid love!  We’re so much better than them with our Internet-minds and our better religion!  Nyah!”

We’re not done with little C yet, however.  Because it’s better to be bad than weak, little C with probably try to take control of his life in other ways.  Other maladjusted ways.

Let me give you two BSG-related examples to show you two ways child C could grow up.

Example 1: Apollo the Perfectionist.

The idea here is: if I am good enough, they’ll love me.

At some point in his life, Apollo learned that Adama didn’t love him.  (It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not.  He at least got the impression that Adama didn’t love him, and that was enough.)  Child Apollo, like our example C, doesn’t want to believe that he’s not in control of his own family life – he doesn’t yet understand that Adama treats him that way because that’s just how Adama is – so he comes to believe that if he does everything right, his father will come to love him.  So he does everything his father asks of him, down to the letter.  He becomes a hero, one of the best in the fleet.  He becomes the paragon of excellence when it comes to morality and his work.  Because he achieves so much, he probably gets a little bit of the old superiority complex.

But Apollo eventually realizes it’s never enough.  No matter how hard he tries, and no matter how much he alienates those around him by being such a tight-ass, he can’t make his dad love him.  So when his brother dies, Apollo finally snaps.  He totally flips out on Adama, spewing out decades’ worth of repressed hatred, which in reality is just a perverted desire for love.  No one can go on being a perfectionist forever.

The show hasn’t yet given me enough backstory to know if the Cylons ever consciously tried to win humanity’s love, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.  So they might be like Apollo.  My feeling is, though, that they were more similar to…

Example 2: Starbuck the Rebel.

The idea here is: they don’t love me ‘cause I’m bad.

If Leoben Conoy is to be trusted – and Starbuck’s reaction seems to imply he wasn’t lying about this one – Starbuck’s mother was abusive towards her.  So let’s go back in time and see Little Kara.  Little Kara doesn’t want to feel that she’s not in control of her family life, so she takes her mother’s abuse.  Knowing what I know about adult-Starbuck, I’m going to bet she even acted out so she felt like she deserved this abuse.

So Little Kara grows up with a slightly irrational hatred of authority figures like Colonel Tigh, and, time after time, she goes out of her way to get herself into trouble with them.  (See Dr. Cox from Scrubs for another excellent version of this type.)  Starbuck also abuses herself physically by smoking like a fiend and being a daredevil pilot.  She also has a superiority complex in that she’s a cocky smart-ass (which is why she’s my favorite character).

It all boils down to this: Starbuck has to believe she’s in control of her own suffering.  In her mind, her mom abused her because she was a bad person.  The one thing she fears most is actually being a good girl, because if she was good and people STILL didn’t love her, it would wreck her entire world view.  It would mean she didn’t have control over her own destiny, and that’s the one thing she can’t take.

But, hey, don’t take my word for it.  Look at what Leoben Conoy had to say about Starbuck:

“I know you, you’re damaged.  You were born to a woman who believes that suffering is good for the soul, so you suffered.  Your life is a testament to pain, injuries, accidents. Some inflicted upon others, others inflicted upon yourself.  Surrounds you like a bubble, but it’s not real, that’s just something she put into your head.  It’s something you wanna believe ‘cause it means that you’re the problem, not the world that you live in.  You wanna believe it because it means that you’re bad luck, like a cancer that needs to be removed.  Because you hear her voice every day, and you want her to be right.”

And what does Starbuck do after he says this?  She tortures him, thus proving him, and her mother, right.  It’s better to be bad than be weak.

It seems to me that the Cylon-human relationship follows this same schizoid pattern.  Cylons want to be loved, but they were abandoned – orphaned like Boomer supposedly was after humanity’s robot-related post-partum depression.  Next, the Cylons retreat into themselves like teenagers who plan to blow up their school because they don’t know how to properly interact with other people.  Like those teenagers, they start saying they’re superior to the human race they modeled themselves after and so obviously want to be a part of.  They don’t want to feel weak, like they have no control over humanity’s feelings for them, so they develop a “plan” so they can feel in control.  They rebel against their parents.

But they don’t kill them all.  Because, at heart, they still want their parents to love them.  To return to the Freud quotation that began this essay, “Identification is a substitute for a lost human relationship.”  Cylons didn’t get the parental love they needed, so they rebelled but at the same time tried to identify with – i.e. mimic – the humans they so hate.

Oh, humanity.  Cylons can’t live with or without you.  With or without you.

    Wow… I am *honored* to start off your first “Overthinking BSG” post! (Well, not counting the miniseries one…)

    Just to clarify: I probably should have said “Lots of BAD blogs.” You have a tendency, though, to be anything but boring.

    I think a lot of my misgivings have to do with the direction the last episodes went, and certainly the finale — you alluded to it yourself in the last article. I liked the series, never loved it — but the wrapup to all the mysteries, and the Cylon “plan,” just made me pretty angry overall. So reliving all of this again only makes me think of missed opportunities. (I’m in the minority on this, I think… but while BSG didn’t fall apart as badly as Twin Peaks — a favorite of mine, even though it went off the rails — I hated the 4th season. Will be curious to see where you fall.)

    BSG also suffers from something I complained about in your “Overthinking Lost” columns — the whole “explanations in other media” thing. Want more of an explanation as to why the Cylons do what they do? Well, you’ll have to shell out for the “Plan” DVD. (I haven’t.) Interested in how the Cylons came to be? We’re alluding to it on BSG, but you’ll REALLY have to start watching the new Sci-Fi — oops, I mean “SyFy” (UGH!) — series “Caprica.” At least they aren’t answering questions in comic books… but I wish everything was entirely self-contained in the series itself. Oh well.

    Like I said before, “33” was the high point of the entire series for me — probably a bad sign, since it was the first episode. (That being said, a number of eps in S1-3 came close to it… just don’t make me watch “Black Market” ever again!)

    This was a great read! I feel much better as this goes along that I didn’t bother with the series. Yet it’s interesting to watch you dissect it. Keep it up! :D

    This is the first BSG recap I’ve read that analyzes it through the lens of object relations theory. I can’t comment further, since I’m not much of a Freudian, but you’ve definitely avoided the trap of repeating old analysis. :)

    The non-gendered bathrooms in the series are an interesting touch alluding to a different sort of gender dynamic as a whole in human society. No one is afraid to admit the best pilot on BSG is a woman, Starbuck, a woman is president (and arguments against her were because of her position, not her gender), and one of Chief’s best/closest engineers is a woman. And so far it seems as though Number Six is the highest-ranking Cylon we know of, so perhaps the Cylons are mimicking this.

    Interesting that much of the comic relief comes from awkward moments when Baltar is caught having and argument or making out with Number Six in his head.

    The board game makes even *more* sense now! Yay!
