The Overview: Bridesmaids

In this edition, we take on Bridesmaids, the 2011 comedy classic starring Kristen Wiig, directed by Paul Feig, and produced by Judd Apatow, which provided a much needed orrective to pre-wedding bromance movies like The Hangover and The Wedding Crashers.

In a lively and wide-ranging discussion, our panel, including a real-life couple planning their real-life wedding, discusses the keyfabe of femininity, the Wiig Corollary to the Bechdel Test, and how it fares in a universe of Apatovian man-boys. Particular attention is paid to the film’s awesome soundtrack—including a contribution from Fiona Apple, the patron saint of Baking Alone—and how it deepens and enhances the film.
