So I was listening to Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely?” today. Then it hit me: Stevie is blind.
What if the question isn’t rhetorical? MAYBE HE REALLY DOESN’T KNOW?
Yes, that’s the point of the song :-)
The “she” is his baby daughter. And the point is he doesn’t have to see her to know that she is lovely — and as we talked about on the Dark Knight Rises overview, “lovely” is a beauty that derives from affection, rather than an affection that derives from beauty.
Although of course, it could also be a dark, cutting song about Steve having an deformed, hideous baby daughter, but never knowing it and never having anyone tell him.
