In the Thriller music video, Michael and his date have the misfortune of passing by a graveyard right as the dead start to rise. To make matters worse for MJ’s girlfriend, he becomes zombified as well. In most zombie movies, this is the part where she gets her brains eaten. But this is not a standard Zombie Apocalypse. This is a Thrillerocalypse.

Sadly, YouTube isn’t letting me embed the actual dance. But here’s some Filipino prisoners giving it their best shot.

My question is: why do the Thriller zombies dance? The obvious answer is: it’s a music video, and people dance in music videos. However, I think there might be a plot-driven reason too.

Given his fixation with people/things that have only one of something (ponies and tricks, dogs and legs, men with arms, etc.), we figured it’d go something like this:

So musician Damon Alburn (Blur) and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl) joined forces to create The Gorillaz, a fictional cartoon band with real albums that are actually kind of cool. They then upped the ante with Monkey: Journey to the West, a live “circus opera” in Chinese.

Now, they’re releasing an album of the music from the production, and Hewlett has directed a music video for the first single.

I have no idea what the hell is going on, but it seems like Damon’s come a long way from getting his head checked by a jumbo jet.
