Yeah, I always just assumed it was the Springfield in Missouri. Missouri was only kind of Confederate, but then there’s the episode where Homer is accused of sexual harassing a babysitter and Grandpa Simpson places a flag with 49 stars on the wall and says that he refuses to recognize Missouri. How puzzling. Wikipedia has over 30 Springfields listed in the US (more in every other English-speaking country in the world).

In the “Behind the Laughter” episode, they say “Northern Kentucky” during the East/Central time zone airing and “Southern Missouri” in the Pacific time zone. On the DVD – they say “Northern Kentucky” and have “Southern Missouri” in the closed captions. I know they’ve played both in syndication and possibly even more locations.

According to the Simpsons movie, the government says that Springfield no longer exists on the map but is now a big landfill for tourists to see! LOl

I do believe that in the behind the music episode of the Simpsons they reveal that they are in fact from Kentucky, but at one point they move the town 10 miles down the road so they could of moved out of the state.

Obviously, Springfield cannot be anywhere according to the evidence provided in the show and movie, but the MOST LIKELY real-life candidate, the one that has the most supporting evidence, is my neighboring town of Springfield, PA, or at least a microcosm of Delaware County, PA. Close to water, mountains, and a power plant, Springfield even has its own Shelbyville in Media, PA. It borders Philadelphia (Capitol City), and is within driving distance of New York, NY.

For further area obscurity, there is also the Simpsons movie bit where Ned Flanders shows Bart the four states which border Springfield: Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky.
