Now that I think about it, a corallary could be made between Sandy and Danny and the notorious teen killers Charles Starkweather and Carolynn Fugate, who were also emblems of the Fifties in a way. They really did try to ride off into the sunset, albeit with a body count behind them that shocked the nation in such an "innocent" time. It's a stretch to suggest that singing teenagers could go on a killing spree, but I'm willing to make that stretch.

As a bona fide lady, I detest Grease, and would never make another man (or woman) suffer through it.

I agree with the notion that Grease has elements of mythology. Riding/driving off into the sunset is visual representation of _and they lived happily ever after_, which is an idealistic perception of relationships and a complete fabrication. It's sort of the theatrical version of cocaine, the audience leaves with an emotional high, but reality is brutal and crushing when they begin to compare their relationships with the relationship of the characters.

Good article, but I have to take points for getting the f*%#ing song stuck in my head.

As a dude who actually really enjoys Grease, I found a lot to disagree with, but I will give you major, MAJOR Kudos for the Icarus imagery at the end there. Wow. I don't think I'll watch that scene the same ever again.
