Well, to be brief (hah, let's see if I pull *that* one off), the implication is that Georgia:America::HELL:Universe. Since Hell is usually "down," someone as low as the DEVIL has to go DOWN to Georgia, it must be pretty bad(ass). And the souls he was looking for must have been pretty damn dark- and apparently enough so to defeat him.

Carolina Drama - The Raconteurs.

It has everything: Family feuds, drunken abusive boyfriends, fighting priests, plot twists, sexually ambiguous children, alcoholic children, milk, violence and (roughly) twelve lines that comprise of "la la la la, la la la la, yeah".
All telling an intriguing tale that, as pointed out in the very first line, may not have a point.
It also goes on to explain that this story can be heard in many different forms, but the only one who really knows how it ends is the mysterious milkman whom we are advised to seek.

A compelling story with an indefinite and therefore intriguing ending and a catchy song to keep it all together (and cause the entire story to be stuck in your head for days).

I think the Devil went DOWN to Georgia because that's the direction that outsiders typically travel to get to Georgia: carpetbaggers, civil rights workers, liberals, etc.

Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat". Despite being mostly "chorus", the story is rich, nuanced and wide-ranging. A man about to be executed tries to argue with the listener that he's ready to die, that he told the truth, and that he's not afraid.

Pretty straightforward. But the title alone, 3 simple words, does more work than most songs' entire lyric sheet. The Mercy Seat is both the throne of God in Heaven, the top of the Ark of the Covenant into which the blood of the sacrifice was poured, and the electric chair on which the convict sits. These connections raise, without ever stating, some pretty intense questions about society, human nature, religion, and God.

As the song progresses, the chorus is repeated over and over, but with slight variations that change and discredit the original statement. The convicts protest of his innocence becomes more strained, and the brutality of the execution becomes less abstract and more explicit.

Blue Comb '78 by Five Iron Frenzy....lost of childhood innocence because of sibling rivalry that caused Reese Roper's beloved comb to fall into the clutches of the greedy Interstate. ;)

"Devil Went Down to Georgia" is one of the battle songs in Guitar Hero- but I knew about it way before the game (so no, I'm not that bad). And I actually played it in my orchestra when I was a junior in hs- a full-blown orchestral arrangement with some solo violinists up front. And we had some students doing the vocal parts, too. That was our "pop" concert. Now that I think about it, "Iron Man" was another song we did at that concert... HMMMMM...

But if you include "Devil Went Down to Georgia," is "Tribute" by Tenacious D not a good buddy for it?
