I played the theme music simultaneously with President-Elect Obama's press conference, which made his even, measured delivery come over like an ironic Control Voice narration from THE OUTER LIMITS. I doubt that Obama would endorse this experiment, however.

All jokes aside, I sure wish someone would release that soundtrack, because it was a great one.

Stay tuned for a future OTI post on the "dies irae" throughout film history. The earliest that I'm sure of is 'The Seventh Seal,' (1957) where you actually get a procession of monks singing the chant and whipping eachother with birch twigs, but it's also - arguably - hidden in the main title theme from Citizen Kane...

Was using the "dies irae" as part of a movie score already cliched at this point? I know it got used in "The Shining" (1980) and "Sleeping with the Enemy" (1991), but I don't know how many before this.

That said, Leonard Rosenman is pretty cool. He also scored Star Trek IV (The Search for Whales), and his title theme for that is full of sequence-y goodness.

I should also mention another movie Rosenman scored, the Ralph Bakshi directed "Lord of the Rings," since it sets up one of my favorite movie parallels, namely the "pornographic animals" => "J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation".

Ralph Bakshi: "Fritz the Cat" -> "Lord of the Rings"
Peter Jackson: "Meet the Feebles" -> "Lord of the Rings"

I'm waiting for "Greg the Bunny" does "The Hobbit" any day now.
