Oooo- way to nuance! Now all of a sudden we are thrust ( I do not think that expression gets used enough) into the conundrum of delving into the original meanings of such phrases. Although I do not think it needs to be The Earth rather than the Earth unless it is a periodical. Hmmm. Maybe this should be its own post, although I must admit that grammar is an unbearably nerdy subject.

Sorry about the typo in my last comment! How embarrassing. I check you guys out every day, so now you have, at the very least, one regular reader. I have a degree in Philosophy which means my brain is overgrown on a diet of Liberal Arts, so naturally my job cannot come close to keeping it occupied. ::Insert picture of brain screaming “FEED ME” here. Mmmm, pop culture junk food . . . it makes the contents of my cranium fat and lazy.::

Huh. You’re totally right, and I never would have noticed the error. My own little geocentric fallacy rearing its head, I suppose: it doesn’t occur to me that Earth is a place name because that would imply that alternate locations (like the Space Vampire Homeworld, for instance) are equally valid.

What about the formulation “the Earth,” as in “Wiped off the face of the Earth” or “The ends of the Earth.” Should that be “the Earth,” or “The Earth?” Or is “the earth” fine in that context? Or is it just an ungrammatical phrase that should be replaced with “the world” whenever possible?

First of- ha! I do believe your commentary was more amusing than the movie itself.

By the way, something that I always notice is the way the media is the way journalist, bloggers, etc., frequently fails to capitalize the “E” on “Earth” when refering to the planet. It is a proper name just like Mars or Jupiter and therefore should be capitalized unless you are refering to earth as is “dirt.” I bother to comment on this because this is, afterall, Overthinking It and seemed appropriate so pass it on.

We showed this at the Case Western Sci-Fi Marathon this year. I agree with everything you said.

I should also get in a plug for the marathon itself. If you can stand Cleveland in January, you get fifteen sci-fi movies in a row, shown as nature intended on the big screen. (And by “on the big screen” I mean from actual goddamned film, not a DVD projector)
